Wagnney Fabiano talks about his return, competition mindset, and the new generation.
Black Belt Wagnney Fabiano has returned to the competitions in the highest level of the sport in 2017. At 41 years old the results have been excellent. A successful competitor in the 90s, Wagnney won the European, Pan-American, Brazilian Nationals, Master 3 division, and the gold medal in the 2017 Abu Dhabi World Pro Canadian Trials in the adult division.
Born in Rio and rooted in Toronto, Canada, has spoken out about his main goal for 2017:
"I got back to the competitions because I stopped fighting MMA, but my foundation will always be Jiu-Jitsu, mainly in Gi. I train since I was young, and I'm glad to be back. I don't wanna stop", says Wagnney, who also has shined in the WEC, Bellator and Shooto ranks, some of the MMA's most popular events in the world, where he collected 16 victories and 4 defeats in his career.
As a student of Wendell Alexander, co-founder of Nova União, Wagnney analyzed the current competitive scenario and pointed out the main changes:
"Well, nowadays there is a lot of different styles, like berimbolo and other movements. But those styles are not for everyone. However, I always keep my foundation, which is strong and good. My way of playing. But I always get some details about any position with the young crew."
After all these years in his Jiu-Jitsu Career, there is even a deeper reason as to why he continues to get on the mat and continue to compete. His overall love for the sport.
"I'm a true adrenaline lover, I love fighting. I've been doing it all my life. Thank God, I turned out fine on these last events I fought. Now the focus is on the IBJJF Worlds".
Wagnney also talked about the importance of Gustavo Dantas, creator of The BJJ Mental Coach movement, which aims to help athletes to perform to best of their abilities and reach their full potential.
"I've been watching for a long time Gustavo Dantas' videos, of The BJJ Mental Coach. They're great and help a lot those who compete in the high level or not."
Before wrapping up the interview, the teacher and athlete Wagnney left a tip to the young competitors of the sport.
"My tip to these young fellows of the new genaration is doing the homework, training and training. Do not try to imitate someone, try to do your style. But before everything, just train".
